eLearning Course: Inclusive by Design

Project Description:

This project focused on the rapid design and deployment of a self-paced online course for University of California employees, aimed at increasing foundational knowledge in accessibility and inclusive learning design. The course was created using a blend of multimedia authoring and accessibility tools to ensure a universally designed experience that models best practices in digital inclusion.

Course Description:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to recognize the importance of accessibility and inclusion in learning design; demonstrate awareness of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, accessibility laws (such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508), and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG); and identify inclusive content strategies that can be applied across a variety of multimedia formats, including videos, documents, slide decks, and eLearning modules. This course doesn’t just talk about accessibility, it models it. From closed captions and alt text to consistent navigation and flexible learning paths, every element is intentionally designed to reflect best practices in accessible and inclusive learning. As learners move through the course, they experience first-hand how thoughtful design can remove barriers and create more equitable learning environments for all.

Problem Solved:

Despite growing awareness of the need for equity in education, many University of California employees lacked practical knowledge of how to implement accessibility and inclusive design in their digital learning materials. This gap often resulted in learning experiences that unintentionally excluded individuals with disabilities or diverse learning needs. The self-paced online course addressed this challenge by providing foundational, actionable training in accessibility laws, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and inclusive content strategies. By modeling best practices throughout the course itself, it not only taught the “what” and “why” of accessibility—it demonstrated the “how,” giving learners the tools and confidence to apply inclusive principles in their own work.
